ALPHA: THE BREATHE CHURCH MEMBERSHIP CLASS
INTRODUCTION: Welcome Home
First things first, a huge WELCOME to the kingdom of God.
Assuming that you have just been born again, I must say well done for making the best decision ever. To become a disciple of the Lord Jesus is the highest honour and unquantifiable blessing anywhere in the universe.
The Lord Jesus commanded us that we must " Go and make disciples of all the nations, baptising them in the name of the Father, and the Son and the Holy Spirit..." Matthew 28:19.
And then the Lord said something very important after that; "teach them to OBSERVE everything that I have commanded you" (Matthew 28:20). Once you are born again through faith, you need to spiritually "enrol" as a disciple(student) and LEARN for the purpose of DOING, all things the Lord has commanded.
So being part of the local church is the first port of call for a disciple. The church is a place of instruction in righteousness, teaching, fellowship, community, and spiritual covering.
The church is not man's idea. It was conceived in the heart of the Father. He gave us a promise of the church just before He was crucified: "...I will build my church and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it." (Matthew 16:17). And now that you are born again, you are part of that victorious church. Hallelujah!
Being a member of the local church is that necessary and important step towards a glorious, and fruitful Christian life.
WHAT IS THE CHURCH?
- The body of Christ. (1 Corinthians 12:27; Ephesians 1:22-23)
- Pillar and ground of truth (1 Tim 3:15). The church is a place of spiritual education.
- Family or household of God (1 Tim 3:5)
WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO BE PART OF A LOCAL CHURCH.
- You become spiritually literate. The church is the place of spiritual education through preaching, teaching and many other programs and activities designed for your spiritual enlightenment.
- The church provides spiritual covering and protection. There are many wolves and fire extinguishers out there. Walking in company with other believers and having a pastor or shepherd who watches over you provides safety for you spiritually.
- The church provides fellowship and hence cures loneliness. Man was never meant to be alone. A human being is a social creature and thrives with like-minded people.
- The church helps you to walk in freedom. Once you are born again, like Lazarus it is like you have been raised from the dead. But after Lazarus came out of the tomb, the Lord Jesus said to the disciples, "Untie him of the grave clothes and let him go." Many of us are born again by the divine act of grace, but we have grave clothes that need the disciples of Jesus to help untie so we can walk in complete freedom. The church will help you to walk in freedom from certain bad habits, addictions, and many like things that limit your freedom in Christ.
- The church helps you to prosper holistically. You are taught through sermons, courses, and positive examples on how to manage finances, relationships, and yourself so you can prosper in every way.
Those who rebel and separate themselves will live in a scorching desert.
“God places the lonely in families; he sets the prisoners free and gives them joy. But he makes the rebellious live in a sun-scorched land.”
Psalms 68:6 NLT
WHO YOU ARE NOW THAT YOU ARE BORN AGAIN.
1. You Are Now Saved.
”For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast. For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.“ Ephesians 2:8-10 NKJV
-
We are saved by faith in Christ.
-
Salvation is not man’s effort, it is the gift of God.
-
We are saved for good works. God wants to raise a people of faith, zealous for good works.
-
To accomplish this purpose God designed the church.
2. You Are Now The Called.
You have been called out of darkness into His marvelous light. You have been delivered from the domain of darkness into the kingdom of the son of His love.
”He has delivered us from the power of darkness and conveyed us into the kingdom of the Son of His love, in whom we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins.“ Colossians 1:13-14 NKJV
”But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light;“
I Peter 2:9 NKJV
-
The Greek word translated into English as "assembly" or "church," depending on which version of the Bible one uses, is ekklesia, and it means "a calling," "a summons" to an assembly. In our case, the Bible makes sure that we understand that our calling is specific and formal. God Himself summons us to be separated away from the world.
-
As time passed in the first century, ekklesia came to be applied to the Christian assembly or congregation to distinguish it from the Jews' Sabbath meeting in a synagogue. The word itself has absolutely no direct connection to the church, but by common usage, it came to be understood as implying those called and separated from the world, and so we speak of "the church." But in Greek, all it means is "those summoned." To us, it implies "summoned by God"; "summoned to be separated from the world"; "summoned so God can reproduce Himself in us."
-
You did not come here by accident, you were called by the Lord and He led you here.
-
You didn’t just decide to come to this church you were called. The church is called the ekklesia meaning the called out ones.
3. Now You Are Christ’s.
-
You belong to Christ first.
-
You are not your own. You are owned by Christ.
”For if we live, we live to the Lord; and if we die, we die to the Lord. Therefore, whether we live or die, we are the Lord’s.“ Romans 14:8 NKJV
4. Now You Are A New Creature.
”Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new. Now all things are of God, who has reconciled us to Himself through Jesus Christ, and has given us the ministry of reconciliation,“ II Corinthians 5:17-18 NKJV
-
If any man is in Christ he is a new creation. Old things have passed away, all things have become new.
-
Being a new creation is a calling to walk in the newness of life (Romans 6:4)
5. Now You Are A Citizen Of Zion(The Kingdom Of God)
”For our citizenship is in heaven, from which we also eagerly wait for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ,“ Philippians 3:20 NKJV
”That at at that time you were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world. But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ.“ Ephesians 2:12-13 NKJV
-
You are a citizen of the Kingdom of God.
-
You are no longer a stranger or alien but now part of the commonwealth of Israel.
-
It is a sojourner who does not abide, citizens have a sense of permanency in their habitats.
6. Now You Belong To The Church.
1 Corinthians 12:27 says, "Now ye are the body of Christ, and members in particular."
-
The owner, Chief shepherd, and ultimate Bishop and King of the church is our Lord Jesus Christ. Our leaders are only shepherds under the instruction of the Lord and our King.
-
Knowing who owns the church is important to exercise caution when dealing with the church. He might be invisible but He is watching everything
-
You are members of the body of Christ
-
Not only are we called to believe, we are called to belong.
-
We belong to one another.
-
We don’t live for ourselves any more, we live for one another.
-
You are to even lay down your life for your brothers and sisters in Christ.
”God sets the solitary in families; He brings out those who are bound into prosperity; But the rebellious dwell in a dry land.“ Psalms 68:6 NKJV
YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH THE CHURCH
- BE DEVOTED: A New Life Of Devotion
The Christian Life is a dedicated life. It is a life of devotion. To be devoted means sold out to a Person or cause. The early church modelled a pattern of devotion.
”And they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. And awe came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were being done through the apostles. And all who believed were together and had all things in common. And they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need. And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts, praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved.“ Acts 2:42-47 ESV
Church growth begins with a devoted membership.
Devoted To Apostolic Doctrine: give yourself completely to the ministry of the Word. Attend teaching, listen to our sermons available on all social media platforms.
Devotion To Prayer: give yourself completely to the ministry and practice of prayer. Learn to pray everyday and be involved in corporate prayers. The Christian life is a life of prayer.
Devotion To Fellowship: prioritise fellowship. Take church attendance seriously. Connect with other church members. You can’t be a friend to every family member but it is healthy to know and have real relationships with a few. Join a Life Group to devote yourself to fellowship in a small group of believers.
Devotion To Breaking Bread: open your home, break bread, with other saints. Take communion with others. Nothing brings hearts 💕 closer than a meal.
Devotion To Unity: the early saints were “together” “in one accord”. Strive for the unity of the church. You wouldn’t want to be a lone ranger doing your own thing.
Devotion To Sharing Wealth: The early church had all things in common. They shared generously among themselves. No one should lack anything in our church family. Share opportunities, food, clothing, and other material things with your brothers and sisters in need.
2. BE PLANTED: Benefits Of Staying Rooted In The Church For A Long Time.
”Those who are planted in the house of the Lord Shall flourish in the courts of our God. They shall still bear fruit in old age; They shall be fresh and flourishing,“ Psalms 92:13-14 NKJV
You are not just called, you have been planted in the house of God (in church).
-
You have an opportunity to grow. Trees don’t do well by being uprooted and planted in new places every month.
-
Every seed needs time to grow, so does the Word preached to you.
-
It is those planted who will flourish in the courts of God. They become fruitful.
-
Fight the temptation to leave the church when you are offended or disappointed. It is better to fix the issues than to leave.
3. BE AN AMBASSADOR: A Life Of Witnessing.
Mark 3:14 (NKJV) says, "Then He appointed twelve, that they might be with Him and that He might send them out to preach,"
-
Jesus called His disciples to BE WITH HIM, and to SEND THEM OUT to represent him and be His witnesses.
-
You are sent to:
-
Represent him. To be His image Bearer.
-
Tell others about Him. The early believers went everywhere preaching the gospel.
-
Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creatures (Matthew 28:19, Mark 16:15-16)
-
Share your testimony of salvation.
ABOUT OUR CHURCH: BREATHE CHURCH GLOBAL.
Statement of Faith
-
We believe that Jesus Christ born of Mary in Bethlehem of Judea in Israel is the Son of the Living God. (Luke 1:34-35)
-
The death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ was an act of redemption for all humanity. (Roman 6:3-4, John 3:14-15)
-
The only means of salvation from sin is to be born again by believing in the resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ and confessing His Lordship. (Romans10:9-10)
-
We believe that the redemptive work of Christ provides salvation of spirit, soul and body of everyone that believes. (John 3:16-17, 1 Peter 2:24)
-
We believe in the regeneration power of the Spirit, and receiving the Holy Spirit as compulsory for every believer. (Roman 8:9, Titus 3:5)
-
We believe in the sanctifying power of the Holy Spirit (Roman 15:16, 2 Thes 2:13)
-
We believe that when one receives the Holy Spirit, he receives divine ability for Christian service and witnessing (Act 1:8, Acts 6:3)
-
We believe that the Bible contains the inspired Word of God (2 Timothy 3:16) and the scriptures should be the end of all contention.
-
We believe that there is one God who has a plurality of personality – Father, Word and the Holy Spirit – and these three are one. (1 John 5:7)
-
We believe that faith in Christ Jesus, and not works of the law, brings the new birth (1 Peter 1:23, James 1:18, John 1:12)
-
We believe that Jesus died for everyone and those who believe in Him should not die again (John 11:26)
-
We believe in the resurrection of the dead (1 Corinthians 15:22-23)
Our Values:
-
The Word Of God. It's the sole and ultimate authority in our lives and our church. We are a Bible believing church (Col 3:16)

-
Prayer. Prayer is key to intimacy with God and victorious Christian living. (Matthew 18:1)
-
Order. Everything must be done in order. (! Corinthians 14:40)

Pastor Tee and Carol were released from Oxygen Life Church under the leadership of Bradley Verreynne in 2020 December to plant and lead an independent church later to which they gave the Holy Ghost inspired name, Breathe Church, whose first location was Central, Port Elizabeth.
Our Partnership:
Though we are an independent ministry, we have special partnerships with other churches globally under the Four12 Global movement currently being led by Joshua Generation Church Leader, Andrew Selley who is now based in the United States Of America..
These partnerships have provided safety, accountability, strategic collaboration to see the kingdom come in many places.
Why Another Church?
Question:
Don’t we have a proliferation of churches already. Why did we have to establish another one?
Answer:
We believe that we need more churches planted than there currently are. Jesus said the harvest is plenteous but the labourers are full. Churches play a vital role in the ingathering of the harvest.
We believe that evangelism that does not lead to church planting is useless. Souls are preserved inside the church.
Church provides safety, direction and a sense of belonging for believers across race, tribe, region and environment.
Church is the only place you see worship modelled.
The Comparison Temptation
This part is for those who have been Christians serving in another church
We are often stuck in the ways we have been raised spiritually. If you were raised Catholic, it will take effort to assimilate in another church family.
To assimilate in a new church, be willing to discard old traditions and embrace new ones. Don’t seek to change the place, seek to understand and then contribute according to the vision of the house. Learn our songs, our culture, our leaders etc.
One Israel Many Tribes; One Kingdom Many Families.
Why are churches so different? Why can’t they all be the same if we use the same Bible?
It’s imperative to understand that uniformity is not synonymous with unity, and diversity is not synonymous with division. We can be diverse in approach and culture and yet be united in what matters. We can unite in essentials, and give each other freedom in peripherals, and in all things walking in love.
Like Israel, we are one nation but twelve different tribes under one God. We don’t compete with other churches, we complement each other.
Can I then have dual or multiple membership?
The local church is a place of accountability and service. It is not helpful to belong to more than one church family. Uprooting yourself from time to time will not help you grow consistently in Christ.
Plant yourself in this local church and be built by the Word and the Spirit through accountable leadership.
Managing Expectations.
Knowing the purpose of the church is important to manage expectations. We stick to our core mandate.
Purpose Of The Church.
-
Place for spiritual nourishment through teaching, preaching, worship and prayer (1Tim 3:15)
-
Place of emotional connection through Fellowship. (Acts 2:42)
-
It is a spiritual and practical support system for our lives. Find support during good times: marriage, birthdays, graduation, new births. Find support in bad times: funerals, sicknesses, poverty etc. (Rom 12:15)
-
The church was created by God for you and not for the Pastor.
Please Note: All our leaders will be available to help, love, care for, and support you at different times but please understand that they also have families, and other responsibilities too, so they may not be available at all times. Give them grace when they fail your standard at some point.
Your Purpose In The Church.
-
Everyone has a role to play for the growth, health and advancement of the church, just like every part of your body has a function. Find out what your purpose is from God. (Romans 12)
As a Member Of The Church there are basics expected of you:
-
Regular attendance in church. At least once a week on a Sunday.
-
Be part of a Life Group that meets once a week.
-
Support the church financially. The church needs money and resources to function and the main sponsor of a church are its members. We support the church financially through tithes, offerings, partnerships, and other financial seeds. You are expected to support the fundraising activities of the church.
-
Volunteer to serve in at least one department and even better, talk to the leaders if you feel you can pioneer a department.
-
Maintain the unity of the Spirit. Avoid things that threaten the unity of the church. Stay away from gossip, godless chatter, criticism. 1 Cor 12:22).
In essentials unity; in peripherals freedom, and in all things love.
-
Recognise and obey the church leadership. Obey your leaders and esteem them very highly. Honour leaders with all your heart, and follow them as they follow Christ. Honouring leaders includes appreciating them for their work. Twice a year. June and December Thanksgiving. Take care of your Pastor in every way you can.
-
Support others in the body during good and bad times. (1 Cor 12:25-26)
Understanding Financial Responsibilities In Church.
-
A life of devotion is a life of total surrender. Our surrender to the Lord will and must include finances.
-
Where your treasure is, there your heart will be. If you put your treasure in the kingdom through the church, your heart will be firmly planted in the kingdom.
Tithing: every member is expected to give at least 10 percent of their income to the church. You are not bound by this percentage, you can and we think we should give more. (Malachi 3:10)
Offering: we appear before the Lord carrying an offering. We give to God that which costs us something.
There are different types of giving in the church. The Doctrine of Tithing and Offerings will be covered in the next course Beta: The Foundation School
Understanding Church Discipline.
-
You will be corrected in love (2 Timothy 2:25-26)
-
You might be rebuked sharply (Titus 1:13)
-
The church reserves the right to excommunicate anyone who breaks fellowship rules according to the Bible. (1 Corinthians 5:1-13)
Leaving The Church.
-
Firstly please don’t leave no matter what happens. Try to fix issues. Things will happen, we can not guarantee that you will not be disappointed or hurt in our church family. Like every normal family, there are model kids and that one naughty child. Church is like a hospital, we’re are all sin sick, some are responding well to the medicine, and others, not so well. The church is for perfecting people, not perfect people. Some struggle with lust, greed, pride, prejudice but we are all loved by God. He forgiving. So do not expect perfect treatment from everybody.
- If you have been stung and offended by someone, loving confront the person. If it doesn't work, bring the matter to the attention of leaders. Leaving the church with unresolved issues is not the solution.
- If you have to leave eventually, don't pollute the well that once gave you drink, others who will come after you would want to drink it. So be kind and say proper goodbyes. You never know, you might consider coming back at a later stage. Don't say bad things about leaders and the church on your way out. But remember, wherever you are going there is still imperfect people. There is not perfect church anywhere, only healthy church.
