Beware Of Covetousness.

"And He said to them, Guard yourselves and keep free from all covetousness (the immoderate desire for wealth, the greedy longing to have more); for a man's life does not consist in and is not derived from possessing overflowing abundance or that which is over and above his needs."
Luke 12:15 AMPC.

The King James Version renders it "beware of covetousness". It sounds like a serious warning, because it is. Coveteousness is the immoderate desire for wealth or the greedy longing to have more. Jesus said a man's life does not consist in or is it derived from the abundance of things he possesses. Well who will listen to you today when you preach like this. We think more money more life right? When we look at those Instagram photos and reels we tend to see more life in our contemporary celebrities yet it's all an illusion. Life is in Jesus and not in things.

Being rich and having a lot of things is not a sin but letting things have you is the problem. Insatiable desire for more things is the reason why many people are not happy. They can't be fulfilled if all they count is not what they have but what someone else has. We never learn from what we have that the luster of things only endures as long as it's not yours.  Once it's yours it becomes loathesome. The grass is always greener farther afield. I remember when I had one shoe I wished I had two and I would be fine. When I got to two, I realised I needed a pair a day for the whole week. Then after that I realised that I needed to match my shoes with new clothes I had bought. Desire is like a running treadmill, it never stops unless you stop it.

God gives us things but warns the rich that their riches may hinder them from "laying hold of eternal life" if they are not careful. There is a command from God for the rich, "As for the rich in this world, charge them not to be proud and arrogant and contemptuous of others, nor to set their hopes on uncertain riches, but on God, Who richly and ceaselessly provides us with everything for [our] enjoyment. [Charge them] to do good, to be rich in good works, to be liberal and generous of heart, ready to share [with others], In this way laying up for themselves [the riches that endure forever as] a good foundation for the future, so that they may grasp that which is life indeed." (1 Timothy 6:17‭-‬19 AMPC). There is that which is life indeed. Life is not in things it is in the Son of God, Jesus Christ; and the effective way to keep your spiritual focus is to be extravagantly generous.

There is a principle that says, "Let things matter little to you than people, and let people matter to you little than God, and let God matter to you the most." When you live by this principle,  you will grasp that which is life indeed. Be anxious for nothing. Do not worry about tomorrow.  Don't be like a rich fool who was rich materially but was not rich towards God. When death came knocking he then realized all his life meant nothing except his accumulated dross he called wealth. We must never lose sight of that which is life indeed in pursuit of fleeting possessions. Do not be so poor that all you have is money. Life is bigger than that.

SPEAK OUT.
I choose to lay hold of eternal life and not pursue a frivolous hunt for material things.
