Cultivate Generosity
“There is one who scatters, yet increases more; and there is one who withholds more than is right, but it leads to poverty. The generous soul will be made rich, And he who waters will also be watered himself.” Proverbs 11:24-25 (NKJV)
There is nothing that better defines the character of the love-nature of God in the Bible than giving or generosity. God gives life to all, He gives health to all, and He gives well being to everyone. The ultimate act of generosity was demonstrated when God gave us His Son to as a sacrifice for our sins. It is the nature of God to be outrageously and extravagantly generous.
If being a "son" means being an inheritor of quality therefore every child of God possesses the nature of God. Generosity is in your spiritual DNA. In our family of faith, there is no stinginess. Look back to Abraham; he gave his son Isaac freely to the Lord. When he met Melchizedek, the King-Priest met him from the slaughter of kings, Abraham gave the tithe of all.
David was particular about the quality of his gifts to the Lord. It had to cost him something significant. “Then the king said to Araunah, “No, but I will surely buy it from you for a price; nor will I offer burnt offerings to the LORD my God with that which costs me nothing.” So David bought the threshing floor and the oxen for fifty shekels of silver.” 2 Samuel 24:24 (NKJV). Not only must we give, we must not give to the Lord that which costs us nothing.
As much as giving is a nature it is also a principle. When you give lavishly, you will receive lavishly. A generous soul will be made rich. If you water others, you will be watered in return.
Whenever there is an opportunity to give in the house of God, use it. When you give you position yourself to receive multiplied blessings. “Give, and it will be given to you: good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over will be put into your bosom. For with the same measure that you use, it will be measured back to you.”
Prayer.
Father, thank you for teaching me to cultivate generosity. I reject stinginess and embrace my giving nature. I am a financier of the gospel, a lifter of men, and hope for many who are in penury, in Jesus name. Amen.
