Do The Work Of An Evangelist
"But you be watchful in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry." 2 Timothy 4:5 (NKJV)
Every Christian has a ministry from the Lord Jesus. It is the ministry of reconciliation—turning men from being enemies of God to children of God through faith in Christ. That is what evangelism is all about: turning many to righteousness.
The Lord Jesus left us with a solemn charge: "Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age. Amen." Matthew 28:19-20 (NKJV)
We are commissioned to go and make disciples, not just to have fun in church. Yes, we should enjoy fellowship with one another as believers, but we must not let the comfort we find among the saints blindside us to our number one job.
Christianity dies once evangelism is relegated to the background. What keeps churches alive and on fire is the fuel of "go ye therefore". Every church that neglects evangelism ceases to receive sponsorship from God and starts dying naturally.
One time when I was concerned about financing the ministry, I received great advice from a dear man of God. He said, "Don't worry about raising money; worry about getting the gospel out." It is so true. When we prioritize getting people to encounter Jesus, we enjoy the supply of God in ministry.
No matter what you do in life, don't neglect to do the work of an evangelist. Are you a singer? Sing very well, but do the work of an evangelist. Are you a musician? Play that instrument well, but don't forget to do the work of an evangelist. It is everyone's responsibility—from the usher to the bishop, evangelize!
You might be working as a doctor, pharmacist, driver, or house help. Do the work of an evangelist wherever you find yourself. Preach the gospel of Jesus Christ to every creature. All who believe will be justified from all things from which they could not be justified by the law of Moses. They will receive forgiveness of sins and an inheritance among those sanctified by faith in Christ Jesus through your preaching.
Prayer
Dear Heavenly Father, I recognize the responsibility You have placed on me to bring the good news of Christ to those far and near. Give me utterance and boldness to discharge my duty as an evangelist—sharing the gospel with those who have not heard. In Jesus' name, Amen.
