Finished Work Part 4: Life And Immortality.

| Spiry Tee

"But has now been revealed by the appearing of our Savior Jesus Christ, who has abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel," (II Timothy 1:10).

The gospel is the good news of salvation wrought by Jesus Christ on the cross. This salvation is all encompassing.  What Jesus accomplished on the cross is a complete overhaul of a system that set in when man sinned in the beginning. When Adam and Eve sinned, death came into the world. And death is not just an event, death is a law, a system and a principle. Because of sin, all creation was subjected to a system that God never created. The ecosystems that prevail today were not God's original intention. The food chains and economic systems obtaining now were brought about because of sin.

When Jesus died for our sins, the Bible says that He "abolished death". To abolish means to put an end to a law, a system or an institution. The law of sin and death was abolished, the system of death was abolished, and the institution called death was abolished. The Bible says, "For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death." (Romans 8:2). So when Jesus said "it is finished" He meant that the law of death was finished, the system of death was finished and the institution of death was finished. There is no need to remain under death's control when it's power was stripped away.

Life has come. Through the gospel of Jesus Christ, life and immortality has been brought to light. Life is from the Greek word zoe, which means life as God has it; and "immortality" is from the Greek word aphtharsia which means incorruptibility or generally, unending existence. This is what Jesus has shed rays upon through the gospel. Life and immortality is available now thanks to the finished work of Christ on the cross. Jesus proved it by His resurrection. He explicitly revealed that He now has power to keep you alive till He returns when He spoke to Peter about John, "Jesus said to him, “If I will that he remain till I come, what is that to you? You follow Me.” (John 21:22). Jesus didn't say that of a fact that John would live till Jesus comes but was surely clear that He has power to do so if He wants to. That's pretty amazing given that no well known religious leader ever made such a claim. Jesus is God indeed. There is nothing too hard for Him and with Him nothing shall be impossible. Hallelujah!

SPEAK OUT.
I affirm that I am free from the law of sin and death. Death and hell shall not prevail against me.
