“I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death.” (Rev 1:18 KJV)
I observe this every time we go out with my family that my wife and kids may go out of the house and get to the car first but without the car keys they will have to wait for me to open the car. They will have to endure the elements until the one with keys arrives. Keys are a sign of power and authority in prophetic language. Jesus has the keys of hell and of death. That means He has power over hell and over death. He is the one to decide whether I live or die but I know Him that He wants me alive to the glory of His Name.
I have heard preaching that depicts Jesus as helpless in face of death. I can remember songs we sang feeling sorry for Jesus thinking He was murdered. Yet even in His death Jesus was in charge. He bowed down His head and dismissed His Spirit into the Father hand. That’s power. He didn’t die and then His head fell on His chest. No. He rested His head and dismissed His Spirit.
That is why Jesus gave us charge to go and raise the dead because He has power over hades and death. “And as ye go, preach, saying, The kingdom of heaven is at hand. Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils: freely ye have received, freely give.” (Mat 10:7-8). Do not be frightened by death, it was defeated by Jesus and its claims over you removed. You have a calling from God to rule over death and raise the dead everywhere.
My Lord and Savior has authority over death. He is the one who decides whether I live or die.
