No Evil Shall Happen To The Righteous.

"There shall no evil happen to the just: but the wicked shall be filled with mischief."
Proverbs 12:21.

When I saw the opening verse in my bible for the first time I could not believe my eyes. You mean "no evil shall happen to the righteous"? I wondered. It was difficult for me to process because I grew up in church circles hearing a popular statement that says, "Bad things happen to good people". Is that true? Jesus said there is no one good except God (Mark 10:18). So the 'good people' part is out of the question considering Jesus' words. When we say that God brings bad things to pass in good people's lives for the purpose of teaching them a lesson we justify men and charge God with wrongdoing. When someone we like dies we usually ask why God would take away all the "good people". Again Jesus said there is no one good but God. We may not have all the reasons why bad things happen to people we think are very good people. It is not our duty to judge whether they are good or not. Jesus said no one is good.

Against this backdrop, "no evil shall happen to the righteous" seems like a contradiction in terms but it's not. There is a big difference between good people and righteous people according to the scriptures. Being righteous means being declared not guilty. This declaration of innocence has nothing to do with the actions of the person involved. It is a divinely legal term to designate a sinner whose place was taken by a righteous Man, Christ Jesus, as someone guiltless. Jesus Christ became sin(the very nature of sin) that we might be made the righteousness of God in Him(2 Corinthians 5:21). Our righteousness is an imputed righteousness apart from works. So when He says "no evil shall happen to the righteous" we must be cognizant of who a righteous person is according to the new testament doctrine - one whose sins has been charged on another.

A Christian's life is a life of absolute advantage. Trials and temptations is not evil. Seemingly discomforting circumstances in a believer's life is not evil happening to them. It is good that is masked as problems. If only we could see the way God sees life, we would stop praying almost two thirds of our prayer requests. We should know like Paul knew that as Christians all things work together for good to them that love God, and are the called according to His purpose (Romans 8:28). Observers will see it like we have come out of trouble, just like one in Proverbs 12:13, who said "the righteous shall come out of trouble", but it was actually never an 'evil happening'. Whatever a Christian experiences, it is for their own good and advancement. James said we should count it all joy when we fall into various trials because it is all for our good in the end.(James 1:2). David said that many hardships and perplexing circumstances confront the righteous, but the Lord rescues him from them all. (Psalms 34:19 AMP). When we change our perspectives about what happens to us, we would be more happier because we will realize those things are not meant to harm us. When confronted by difficult circumstances, the Lord is always there to defend His own. He will rescue you from poverty and lack, He will deliver you from sickness and death. This is our God.

The only problem will only be when we create evil for ourselves by not listening to Him, no one will be responsible but ourselves. Even then, the Lord delivers us from self inflicted calamities. Oh how good is our God.

SPEAK OUT.

Christ was afflicted with and for our sins, sickness and death so that we may be free from evil.
