Vacate Certain Environments.

Scripture Reading: 2 Peter 2:7-8 (NKJV)
“And delivered righteous Lot, who was oppressed by the filthy conduct of the wicked (for that righteous man, dwelling among them, tormented his righteous soul from day to day by seeing and hearing their lawless deeds).”

Devotional Reflection.

God cares deeply about the environments we choose to dwell in. Some blessings can only take root when we’re in the right surroundings. Think of Abraham, whom God called to leave his homeland and family for a promised land where he would become a blessed and a mighty nation. Abram obeyed, left all and followed the voice of God out of his familiar environment, and he later received the promise.

“Now the LORD had said to Abram: ‘Get out of your country, from your family and from your father’s house, to a land that I will show you. I will make you a great nation; I will bless you and make your name great; and you shall be a blessing’” (Genesis 12:1-2, NKJV).

Abraham's cousin, Lot, however chose to live in a place full of evil. Though righteous, Lot chose to live in Sodom-a city given to all kinds of perversion, and the daily exposure to lawlessness tormented his soul. The constant barrage of sin weighed heavily on him, showing how toxic surroundings can erode our peace and spiritual vitality.

Our surroundings shape us more than we often realise. They can nurture our faith or stifle our potential. Picture a young tree struggling in a polluted, shaded city corner, hemmed in by concrete and litter. Its roots find little nourishment, and its leaves barely catch sunlight, leaving it wilted and stunted.

Now imagine that same tree transplanted to a vibrant field, with fertile soil and abundant sunlight. There, it thrives, stretching tall and bearing fruit in season. Our souls are much like that tree—our environment determines whether we wither or flourish.

We must be intentional about where we plant ourselves. Avoid environments steeped in violence or crime, as constant exposure can desensitise us or our children, shaping their hearts toward what they see. Likewise, places marked by poverty or scarcity thinking can trap us in a mindset of lack, as poverty often begins in the mind before it manifests in our circumstances.

Instead, seek surroundings that inspire godliness, faith, and success. Surround yourself with people and places that uplift your spirit and align with God’s purpose for your life. Like that tree moved to fertile ground, disconnect from toxic, pessimistic settings to cultivate a life of hope, positivity, and spiritual growth.

Prayer
Heavenly Father, guide me to environments where my faith and purpose can flourish. Help me disconnect from places and influences that hinder my spiritual growth or dim my hope. Plant me in godly, inspiring surroundings that reflect Your will for my life. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
